I’ve been in contact with the sculpture of The Gaelic Chieftain, Maurice Harron. This is an extract from his email explaining the background:

“The location in the Curlieu Hills in North Roscommon really caught my attention and inspired the sculpture. I used to live not far from there and knew about the history of the place. In 1599 the Irish chieftains, Red Hugh O’Donnell and Hugh O’Neill defeated an English army there – the last victory in an open battle before the defeat at Kinsale and the end of the Gaelic clans.

I’m really pleased about the photo hits – it’s true that sculptures are more known through the sister artform of photography than are actually seen ‘in the flesh.’ The lighting effects bring something magical to the image.”
